Le Maître des rochers

Adolphe Julien Fouéré (1839-1910), plus connu sous le nom d’Abbé Fouré, a commencé à sculpter des rochers en bord de mer à la fin du XIXe siècle près de Saint-Malo, en Bretagne.

Contemporain du Facteur Cheval, il est une des grandes figures anciennes de l’Art brut. Des centaines de cartes postales ont circulé montrant son travail. Même s’il n’a pas la même célébrité aujourd’hui, l’environnement naturel qu’il a sculpté est tout aussi impressionnant.

On peut toujours voir ses Rochers sculptés à Rothéneuf, malheureusement très dégradés par le vent, la mer et les pas des visiteurs. Ce livre montre des photos anciennes, en noir et blanc ou colorisées à l’époque, qui en présentent un état plus fidèle. Les sculptures sur bois de Fouéré, qui étaient jadis exposées dans son Ermitage, ont également en grande partie disparu. Quelques oeuvres qui lui ont été attribuées sont ici reproduites.

Il est complexe de saisir précisément la portée de son œuvre, car il n’a pas écrit à ce sujet, et des interprétations fantaisistes lui ont été surimposées à posteriori. Elle est
malgré tout incroyablement fascinante. Son bric-à-brac de monstres, d’animaux et de personnages légendaires est un univers naïf et mystérieux à redécouvrir.

Adolphe Julien Fouéré, known under the name of Abbé Fouré ("Abbot Fouré"), began to sculpt rocks in front of the sea in the end of the 19th century in France, Brittany, near the city of St Malo.

He was a very famous french folk artist at that time, dozens of postcards were printed, showing pictures of his works on stone and wood.

Nowadays, you can still visit the Rochers Sculptés ("Sculpted Rocks") in the city of Rothéneuf, but they are fading day after day, injured by the wind, the sea… and the feet of the visitors. We prefered to show ancient photographies, in black and white or colored by hand. They show the primary state of Fouéré's work.

It's very complicated to understand the exact meaning of these pieces of art, because Fouéré didn't write about his intriguing universe of saints, animals, legendary figures and monsters.
